It can be advantageous to work with people and causes on the other side. Leah Garcés shares her experience and advice. She’s author of the book, Grilled: Turning Adversaries into Allies to Change the Chicken Industry. She’s also president of Mercy For Animals.
Tony opens up by introducing the guest of the day, Leah Garces. Leah starts off by discussing her experience of growing up in Florida. Growing up around animals shaped her life. Leah talk about how ducks in particular were close to her heart, even as a little girl. Leah ends up the segment by talking about chicken farms.
Tony starts off by asking Leah to discuss how she turned adversaries into allies. They go on to talk about how laws prevent anyone from seeing what goes on in chicken farms. Leah goes into her story of how she first met with a Chicken Farm owner. The meeting went the complete opposite of how Leah thought it would go. Leah got the opportunity to film the events that were going on in the chicken farm. She briefly discusses what she witnessed and how she even had to take meds after entering the farm. Leah ends the segment by discussing how it was really important to establish trust between her and the Chicken Farmer, Craig.
Leah opens this segment talking about her book, and how common ground played an important role in gaining trust with her adversaries. She continues by talking about how she met with different people within in the farming community. Within her discussion, Leah talk of how a chicken disease was spreading throughout the farms, and how the people at the top were not too concerned about it. Leah is still learning how to work together with her adversaries to give them voice. Leah ends this segment by talking about Global Animal Partnership.
Leah opens up about how having kids changed her life path. She discusses of how she begin to care more about animals and how laws are completely against farm animals. She then dissects a quote in her book, “A person can have the right intentions, but end up on the wrong path”. Leah and Tony go on to discuss how you have to reach across the aisle to make a change. The segment ended with Leah discussing how over 200 companies have changed their policies on farm animals.
