[EPISODE 122] Holly Holly Christmas
Flowers: One of natures perfect designs. Mother Nature’s perfect little painting. Flowers are the first time we truly notice something of significance.
They inspire us and that’s why we have Master Florist Tom Sakas here to discuss the parallels between flowers, floral design and interior design.
And since its only a couple weeks from Christmas, I want to talk about using nature, pines and pine cones, holly and berries and flowers that go far and beyond poinsettias.
So, this Christmas lets design our homes with flowers. Let’s get inspired by the beauty of nature! It’s the perfect time to bring the beauty of the outside into our homes.
According to David, flowers are one of nature’s most perfect designs. They are mysterious, powerful, and significant as without them, our homes will not look complete. He introduces renowned florist Tom Sakas, owner of Gramercy Park Flower Shop. He wants to discuss with him about the importance of bringing floral designs inside to our homes and using them naturally as we do outside.
Tom Sakas of the Gramercy Park Flower Shop joins the show. To him, beauty is anything that grabs anyone’s attention and soothing to the eye, just like the paintings inside his house. Tom gives a quick history about how his beginnings from when his family got into the flower business to how he became the surviving member of the family to sell flowers. David and Tom then speak on the trends in the flower business. Tom mentions that while he tries to keep up with the times, he still goes about selling things by looking at other flower gardens and creating color combinations. Plus, a little about his hiking adventures with his kids, how Tom was able to convince his dad to change their business model, and why orchids is his favorite flower.
David and Tom talk about Christmas and how everything changes for Tom’s business during the holiday season. Tom mentions the different flower designs that are unique during this time of year, including amaryllis and poinsettia, which are the most common type of flowers being used for the season. He also said that the combination of twigs, branches, or any kind of greens can really make holiday flower patterns stand out more and bring excitement to everyone. Then, Tom tells us how people are very careful when making flower arrangements as gifts and a quick explanation on how to deal with clients when it comes to designing their homes.
David and Tom answer questions from listeners. Tom gives tips on how to keep flowers fresher and last longer. He says misting on a regular basis, putting flowers in clean water and keeping it at room temperature, and bleaching the water are the best ways to do that. Also, how designing flowers in the business has changed overtime and unusual color arrangements during the holiday season.
