[Episode 118] What The Eye Arranges
On Tonight’s Show- “What The Eye Arranges”. My special guest Art Curator Paul Efstathiou from Highlight Curated. Paul and I are going to discuss his recent exhibition Highlight:Chelsea at the Hollis Taggart Galleries. Paul’s arrangement of 13 diverse artists into one gallery show was an achievement of design, intention and storytelling.
I am so excited to talk to Paul about how I believe Interior Designers curate homes in the same manner he curates art. We will compare his favorite piece of art with one of my favorite rooms. We will discuss “what the eye arranges” and how the Interior Designer and the Art Curator are responsible to tell a visual story; to focus the observant eye, to inform the onlooker and through composition invokes what is beautiful in front of us.
David begins by comparing how interior designers curate homes in the same way that curators curate art. David tells the story of discussing color with a colorblind client to show that how we see things is how we interpret the world. For David, the role of the artist and designer is to develop the order of what you see, how you see, and build the story between various items. Tonight’s show will demonstrate how a visual story is created through both design and art.
David welcomes Paul Efstathiou to share his experience as an art curator. Paul feels beauty positive emotion and sees beauty in his home’s energy. Paul then tells the story of his father’s art gallery and reflects how early exposure to art led him to find his passion at a young age. Paul then shares his process for selecting pieces for his exhibitions. He describes curating as “visual composing” where the curator tries to create “a beautiful symphony”.
Paul describes his favorite artwork, a piece by Joan Mitchell, and why it impacted him. David describes a home that inspired him in a similar manner. They then discuss Paul’s recent exhibition at the Hollis Taggart Gallery. Paul says that it is very rewarding to see a client’s reaction to installing a piece you have curated. Paul notes that he tries to create a sense of community at his exhibitions.
Paul shares the dates for his upcoming exhibition at the National Arts Club Gramercy Park starting January 31st. David and Paul explore the color palette at Paul’s last exhibition. Paul describes how he plans color schemes across an exhibition. David brings up color memory and its role in design. Paul talks through how he chooses how to best showcase his artists’ work.
