In the first episode of a two- part conversation, host David Thiergartner, owner of David Thiergartner Interiors converses with Rinat Lavi, President of Rinat Lavi Interiors.
Rinat explores her beginnings in design, citing her exposure to classical and modern architecture in Tel Aviv as key influences on her design style. David and Rinat have an engaging conversation on their process and offer guidance on how clients can better direct their design projects. The episode explores the meaning of beauty and how to make your home tell your story.
David begins tonight’s show reminiscing about his younger days of piano lessons and long-distance swim practice. His formative experiences remind us of the importance of practice, patience, and persistence. He believes the core essence of design consists of learning, curiosity, and returning to the basics. He delves into how the skills learned in the pool and at the piano help him to understand clients, focus his design mindset, and build a new story within each home.
For Rinat, beauty lies in nature and in items that withstand the test of time. She revisits her childhood growing up in Tel Aviv, spending hours reading through design magazines and visiting Greek and Roman architecture on field trips. These formative experiences kindled her passion which she now pursues working in residential design. Her appreciation for past and present design styles informs her approach. She then explains her collaborative approach and how to build a plan through dialogue and articulation of ideas. Her style seeks to incorporate old and new while curtailing designs to her clients’ needs.
Rinat and David walk through their design process. Beginning at the floor plan, David and Rinat explore the collaborative process of a design project. Rinat encourages clients to be aware of their desires and be engaged in the creativity of the design process. Awareness empowers clients to understand their design choices. The segment explores color philosophy and how to make spaces flow. They further discuss the ways other design choices all contribute to having all the spaces in a home speak to one another, completing the story of the home.
In the final segment of tonight’s episode, Rinat and David answer questions from the listeners. They begin with the challenges of scale and proportion and provide advice on how to maximize space within a home. They pivot to how to deal with the overcoming apprehension at the beginning of a project. The simple advice of an engaged professional can go a long way in getting your project started. Together, they reiterate the ways awareness can help direct one’s design projects.
