This week, Noreen speaks with Robin Gelfenbein, the Founder of Yum’s the Word, a show that mixes old school fun with modern-day storytelling.
Noreen begins this segment by introducing her guest, Robin, one of Noreen’s earliest clients. Robin dreamed of being a comedian and Noreen helped coach her so she could achieve her dreams. Robin is the self-proclaimed “ambassador of fun.” She hosts a series known as Yum’s the Word, in which she makes ice cream cakes and tell stories to an audience.
Noreen and Robin begin this next segment by discussing Yum’s the Word origins. Robin believes that Yum’s the Word is a full expression of herself because it is about food, and as an Italian Jewish woman, food is a central part of her life. Yum’s the Word is a comedy, but also involves games, and can also get serious because it covers a range of topics and themes. Robin’s aunt is her biggest inspiration, and the person who taught her how to make ice cream cake, and is the reason she started Yum’s the Word. Currently, Robin is writing a screenplay about her experience driving the Oscar Mayer Wiener-mobile. Robin goes on to describe the process to landing this job.
Noreen and Robin pick backup on Robin’s story about how to landed the Oscar Mayer Wiener-mobile driving job. Some of the things she had to do to land the job included singing and recording songs, and tap dancing on carpet in front of a cameraman. Robin then goes on to describe some of her favorite things about creating ice cream cakes, such as ingredients she uses and the names she gives the cakes. One of her favorites is Mint Oreo Speedwagon and Caramel Toe. Robin ended up being the top choice for the Oscar Mayer Wiener-mobile driver, which blew her away because she was not confident she would get the job.
Noreen and Robin discuss whether or not people should go all out on pursuing their dreams. Robin believes that taking risks is better than not taking risks since it could be the difference between getting what you want and going unnoticed. Robin embraced her voice, literally and figuratively to achieve her comedic career. Her goal with Yum’s the Word is to make the audience feel as comfortable and involved as possible, which is why the audience is so involved and it is hosted in her apartment. Robin discusses how much Noreen pushed her to overcome her fear, and how it helped her as a comedian.
